A Guide on How to Tie Dye T-shirts

Ah the sweet summer’s here. We are sure you have plans to spend your days at the beach or at the pool and drinking a lot of pina coladas! Well, who doesn’t like the summers? This is the holiday season too! But hey, if you are going on a vacation or even on a mini-holiday, are you planning to wear those boring old t-shirts? Imagine the pictures! Do you really wish to look boring and dull while you are actually enjoying? No, obviously not. Also, what about that favourite old t-shirt of yours that fits you like your skin? Don’t throw it away. We have got you covered. Splash them with colours! Yes, you can tie-dye your t-shirts at home! Here is a guide on how to tie-dye t-shirts at home:

  • What you will need:

1.Tie-Dye Kit (this is the simplest way. They can be bought in-store or online)

2.T-shirts (Plain white work best, but other light colours do too)

3.Bottles to store the dye (if not in the kit)

4.Rubber bands (if not in the kit)

5.Rubber gloves (buy extra)

6.Table cover (or bin bag)

7.Small plastic bags or cling film

9.Kitchen roll or rags to mop up any excess dye

  • How to tie dye your t-shirt:

Step 1:

Soak the t-shirt that you wish to tie dye in lukewarm water. Make sure if the dye that you are using requires it to be soaked in anything else. Some dyes require the piece of clothing to be soaked in sodium carbonate. Make sure they are steeping.

Step 2:

Use the instructions given by the manufacturer and prepare the dye accordingly. If you are using the ones that are a powder in the base of bottles, you will need to add water to fill the bottles and shake to mix the powder. Close the lid and continue to shake until you have all your dye ready.

Step 3:

Wring out the t-shirt because you want them damp, but not soaking. After they are dry enough, spread the t-shirt out flat onto of your table cover or bin bag. Deciding on what you want your pattern to look like on your t-shirt is important. If you can choose to put it in a spiral design, you would have to pinch the middle of your t-shirt and twist it until the t-shirt is in a circle type shape. This is the most common pattern.

Step 4:

Next thing to do is to dunk sections of your shirt in the dyes. Don’t dunk one section completely in one dye as the colours will get mixed and turn out looking messy. Instead make sure all sections are dunked in one colour and all fabric is wet. Set it aside and let the shirt dry.

Step 5:

The next step is to put the t-shirt into a small plastic bag or cover with cling film. You must seal the bag and leave it in a dry area for 12-24 hours. The longer the bag stays in the warm, dry area, the more intense the colours will turn out to be.

Step 6:

After 12 to 24 hours, rinse the t-shirts in lukewarm water until the water turns out to be clear. After washing them wring them out and hang them up to dry.Once the t-shirt is dry it is ready to wear.

Now that you have learned how to tie dye your t-shirt at home, make your summer fun and colourful!
